A graduate from the Instituto Superior de Arte of Cuba, as Licentiate in Music with Specialty in Guitar, under the guidance of Maestro Víctor Pellegrini. Additionally he has received classes from Maestros Carlos Guzmán, Pepe Coggiola, Marta Cuervo, Rey Guerra, and Guitar Craft/Guitar Circle seminars.
As a soloist or member of a musical ensemble he has developed an intense activity with performances in several cities of Mexico (III, IV, VII, IX, X, XII, and XIV Encuentro Internacional de Guitarra of Centro Nacional de las Artes, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010, and 2012; I Festival de Guitarra of Yucatán, 2002; XXV, XXVI, XXVII, XXVIII, and XXIX Foro Internacional de Música Nueva "Manuel Enríquez", 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007; II and V Festival Internacional Cervantino Barroco of San Cristóbal de las Casas, 2003, and 2006; III and IX International Festival "Guitarra sin Fronteras" of Chihuahua, 2005, and 2011; V Festival Nacional de Guitarra of Puebla, 2007; Robert Fripp and The Orchestra of Crafty Guitarists XII, Mexico City Tour, 2016; XII Festival de Guitarra Clásica "Ramón Noble", Pachuca, Hidalgo 2019), Cuba (Festival Internacional de Música Contemporánea, 1999, 2005, and 2007; IDENTIDADES, IV and V Encuentro de Guitarras, 2018 and 2020; Leo Brouwer´s 80th Birthday Celebration at Teatro Martí, Havana, Cuba, 2019), Ecuador, Turkey (2nd. His musical development has brought about that conductors such as Leo Brouwer (Cuba), Eduardo Sánchez Zúber (Mexico), Enrique Pérez Mesa (Cuba), Guido López Gavilán (Cuba), Irina Guerra Lig-Long (Cuba), Pablo Buitrago (Nicaragua), Ramón Rodríguez (Nicaragua), Ricardo Vargas (Costa Rica), José Miramontes Zapata, Germán Tort (Mexico), amongst others, constantly invite him to perform along with orchestras; particularly the Orquesta de Cámara de Morelos (Mexico), Orquesta Sinfónica de Matanzas (Cuba), Orquesa de Cámara "Música Eterna" (Cuba), Orquesta Nacional de Nicaragua (Nicaragua), Orquesta Sinfónica de Michoacán (Mexico), Camerata Bach (Nicaragua), La Orquesta CR (Costa Rica), Orquesta Sinfónica de San Luis Potosí (Mexico), Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Cuba (Cuba), Orquesta de la Secretaría de Marina (Méixco), amongst others.
He has had outstanding participations in contests; among them:
Middle Level Students Festival of the Escuela Nacional de Música of Cuba, in which he obtained a mention for the best interpretation of Cuban music (1990).
First National Guitar Contest of Taxco (Mexico 1991), in which he obtained the 3rd prize.
Second Classical Guitar Contest "Graziella Lassere de Chappard" of Guanajuato (Mexico 1991), in which he obtained the 1st prize.
Composers such as Leo Brouwer (Cuba), Ernesto García de León (Mexico), Juan Helguera (Mexico), Roberto Medina (Mexico), Boris Díaz (Cuba), and Guillermo González Phillips (Mexico) have written works dedicated to Fernando Mariña.
He has also developed an intense teaching activity, delivering master classes. At this time, he coordinates the Academia de Guitarra at Escuela Superior de Música of the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, a responsabiltiy he also discharged in the periods between 2001 and 2006; and between 2008 and 2010. Between 2006 and 2007 he was academic head of this same school where he teaches guitar since 1999.
As a performer of chamber music he has performed with the Argentinean guitarist Víctor Pellegrini, the Instituto Superior de Arte de Cuba String Quartet, the Convivium Musicum Choral Ensemble of Mexico, the Centro de las Artes de Guanajuato Vocal Ensemble, the "Amadeo Roldán" String Quartet of Cuba, amongst others. Since 1999 he is a member of the Dúo García de León-Mariña. In between 2009-2018 he was a member of the guitar group 3nsambl3/3NS4MBL3 (https://3nsambl3-3ns4mbl3.webnode.es/). In between 2010-2013 he was a member of the Contemporary Guitar Ensemble (www.cge.mx), and in between 2011-2015 he was a member of ZIG Z4G (www.facebook.com/ZIGZ4Gmex)
Since 2001, he is an exclusive artist of the discographic company Ediciones Pentagrama where he coordinates the Collection LA GUITARRA since 2014 and where he has released several cds as a solo guitarist or a member of an ensemble or chamber group.
